Today is our last day of exploring in Singapore. It is bittersweet but I am ready to go back to the U.S. This trip has been a major escape from reality, but I think it’s time to get back into a routine again. We spent the morning exploring Little India. We spent some time at the Indian Cultural Center. Afterwards we went to an Indian restaurant that serves all the food on banana leaves. The food was very spicy but had a good flavor. It was fun to eat off of a banana leaf and try eating with our hands.
In the afternoon, we took a river cruise around the bay. We were able to see all the skyscrapers but also the colorfully painted businesses and side streets. It was very peaceful to cruise along the river and bay. We also saw the famous Merlion statue. The upper part is a lion head and the bottom part is a mermaid.
Since it was our last night in Malaysia, I wanted to make sure that I did something extra special. Melissa and I had been looking into going to the Night Safari near the Singapore Zoo. The main issue was how far away it was from where we were staying. While in Singapore, our group had stayed in the southern part of the island. However, the Singapore Zoo is at the top of the island. But we decided that we really wanted to experience the world’s first ever Night Safari, so we embarked on our journey.
We took the MRT (subway) all the way to the opposite side of the island. This journey took us a little over an hour. Once out of the MRT station, we walked to the special Singapore Zoo bus and waited. About ten minutes later we were on the shuttle and riding 15 minutes to the Night Safari.
At the Night Safari we did three main things. The first thing we did was ride the tram through the jungle. This ride was included in the price of admission. It was a great way to get introduced to animals in the park while sitting down and covering a lot in a short amount of time. I have never been to a zoo or seen animals at night before. This experience was a great way to see animals in their natural habitat at night. The other interesting thing about this Night Safari is that it only has nocturnal animals.
After riding on the tram, there were four walking trails we could explore. Each of these trails had different kinds of animals that belonged to similar groups. We saw everything from elephants and tigers to aardvarks and wallabies. The cave with snakes and bats was the scariest part for me.
Once we were done looking at all the amazing night creatures, we made our way to the animal show. The hosts brought out different animals that were able to perform tricks. My favorite animals were the hyenas and otters and demonstrated how to properly recycle. Even though it was a long journey to get to the Night Safari and back, it was very rewarding and enjoyable.
