After waiting over a year to take our trip to Malaysia, we are finally going. Due to Covid-19 our trip had been canceled for the summer before junior year (when we were originally supposed to go). Although we studied Southeast Asia over a year ago, we are all still very eager to explore the culture and learn as much as possible.
I started today by packing my suitcase and backpack with everything I would need for the trip. I made sure to pack light as we will be able to do laundry everyday and will be moving in and out of multiple hotels over the next three weeks. After everything was packed, I headed to the airport to meet up with my classmates. It was good that I arrived at the airport five hours early because there were some problems that arose with our planned transportation while in Malaysia. After that was ironed out, we were all able to safely fly out of LAX.
The plane ride from LAX to Manila, Philippines was fifteen hours.
Once in the Philippines we had a four hour layover where I got a cheese flatbread pizza, a chocolate croissant, and coffee. Once the time came we got on the next plane and flew four hours to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
We had a five hour layover in KL where we had to go through TSA again and recheck our bags because we changed airlines. During the layover, we all ate Din Tai Fung together.
Then, we boarded our final plane to Kuching, Malaysia. This flight was two hours long.
Once we landed in Kuching, we went through our final immigation checkpoint and hopped onto the bus waiting for us.
Our bus, complete with a driver and tour guide for the next three days, took us to the Hilton Hotel where we would spend the next three nights. For this trip, there are two people in a room, each with our own beds. My roommate is Melissa and we are quickly finding out that we have a lot in common. I cannot wait to explore Kuching tomorrow and see Malaysia for the first time.
