Today is our last day in Kuching. I am really sad because Kuching has been such a great city to start out our trip with. I had another great breakfast this morning at the hotel. We had the morning free so Melissa and I decided to walk around town one last time. We went to the souvenir shops that were closed the night before. Next, we decided to go to a grocery store to see if there were any snacks we wanted. We ended up getting ice cream, coffee, and some chocolates. In the grocery store there were many English and Australian brands which we found to be interesting. They were also playing a lot of western music including a lot of Celine Dion. After grocery shopping we needed to go to Mr. DIY to look for fans. We ended up spending a lot of time in this multipurpose store. Melissa got a lot of little trinkets to give as gifts to her family.
After shopping all morning we decided to go back to KopiCut for more delicious coffee and food. We both got spaghetti, fries, and more iced coffee. Once lunch was done, we headed back to the hotel to grab our suitcases from the front desk and get ready for our flight to Penang.
The whole group headed to the airport and eventually made it through TSA and customs. Soon we were on the two hour flight to Penang, an island off the coast of the mainland. Once we arrived in Penang we were greeted by our new tour guide, Benny, and our bus that would be taking us to Singapore. We checked into our hotel, Hotel Jen, and got settled.
One thing I have noticed on this trip is the influence that Western culture has on Malaysia. I’m not sure if the influence extends to other Southeast Asian countries, but it is very prevalent in Malaysia. Everywhere we go, most of the signs are in English. Most of the music that is playing in stores is in english and songs that we would hear in the United States. Even though English is one of the main languages in Malaysia, I was not expecting it to be this easy to navigate and communicate.
